Trace Fossils

Trace fossils are fossilized tracks and burrows left by ancient animals as they moved through soft sediment such as mud. As they walked or ran, their feet, tails, and other body parts left impressions in the soft sediment, which became harden and preserved over time. By analysising tracks, paleontologist can estimate animals' stride and running speed.

Burrows are a different kind of trace fossil. Burrows show tunnels that animals left in soft sediments, or rocks. Studing fossilzed burrows can give us clues to wheter these burrowing ancient animals lived aggregated together, or kept their distances from each other.
