Taking Notes While Reading Your Biology Textbook

Follow The Steps Below for notes while before reading a chapter section assigned in your textbook.

  1. In your notebook, write down "Notes from Chp. #, Section #", where the chapter and seciton number will replace #.
  2. Turn the section objectives into questions, then write the questions in your notebook.
  3. For the first paragraph, write the topic sentence in your own words.
  4. Indent under your topic sentence, then write notes from that paragraph. Remember to keep write short phrases, and not sentences.
  5. For vocabulary words (typed in bold face), write the vocabulary word followed by a colon, for example:
  6. water: molecule made of one-part oxygen and two-parts hydrogen.
  7. If the paragraph refers to a diagram, draw the diagram in your notes.
  8. Now, repeat steps 3 to 6 for the other paragraphs.
